These pieces are made of 90 percent abaca fiber handmade paper. When the pieces have dried they are painted with gesso on all sides to seal the paper.The fired and patined copper that is burned individually in a wood burning stove, are adhered to the paper and a cement mixture is spread on the areas designated for cement. Each area is taped up to three times for each added layer of texture and color. The areas still open, are covered with joint compound to create a beautiful textured surface. All textured surfaces are sanded, stained and layered with encaustic ( bees wax, tree resin, dry pigments ) Kara creates each piece to have its own unique arrangement of patterns, colors, cracks and metals to create balance across the set of four sticks. The use of handmade paper for the canvas of the piece gives an organic feel to the piece and the added benefit of keeping the work very light for hanging.This set of work would weight about 8 lb. in total. The pieces are wired and hung without a frame.
